An alternator rebuild kit is only as good as its two bearings. Brushes and regulators fail electrically; bearings fail audibly — and a whining rebuilt unit comes back as a warranty claim. For every bearing in the kit, specify five things: exact boundary dimensions (d × D × B), position (drive end or slip-ring end), outer-ring retention structure (plain, EC or NP), seal and internal clearance (typically 2RS and C3), and noise grade (Z3V3). Then confirm fitment by the alternator or OEM bearing number — never by brand alone.

This guide is written for alternator remanufacturers, rebuild-kit assemblers and auto-electric distributors who put bearings on a kit bill of materials. It uses OTT's own alternator catalog (60+ models, bore 8–32 mm) for the examples.

Key takeaways

  • A rebuild kit usually needs two different bearings: a larger drive-end bearing (6203, 6303, 62303 class) and a small slip-ring-end bearing (B8 / B10 / B12 series are common).
  • "6203" alone is not a specification: OTT's catalog lists 6203 variants in 17×40×12 mm and 17×40×14 mm, plus 14 mm and 16 mm bore versions.
  • Brand fitment is model-specific. Among OTT bearings, only SA6202-2RSM and SA6303-2RSM currently list verified Bosch and Denso numbers.
  • OTT alternator bearings are Z3V3 noise grade with 100% vibration testing; two OTT alternator bearing models passed a 1,004-hour endurance test run by a Russian OEM customer.

What Goes Into an Alternator Rebuild Kit

A typical rebuild kit replaces the wear parts of the alternator: brushes (or a brush holder), the voltage regulator, the rectifier, sometimes the slip ring — and the bearings. The bearings are the parts in that list that carry the rotor and the belt load, and they do different jobs at each end of the rotor shaft:

PositionLoadTypical OTT examplesDimensions (mm)
Drive end (pulley side)Belt tension + rotor weight6203-2RS, 6303-2RS, SA6303-2RSM, 62303-2RS17×40×12, 17×47×14, 17×47×14, 17×47×19
Slip-ring end (rear)Mainly rotor weight, compact housingB10-50D, B8-23D10×27×11, 8×23×14

The drive-end bearing carries the belt load, so in most alternators it is the larger of the two (some designs use two bearings of the same size). The slip-ring-end bearing sits in a tight rear housing next to the brushes, which is why so many of them are special sizes rather than standard 62xx numbers. OTT's catalog references list B10-50D and B8-23D at the slip-ring end, and PFI lists the 62303-2RS specification at the drive end of Marelli alternators on Fiat trucks and tractors.

Spec 1: Exact Boundary Dimensions, Not Just the Series Number

Kit errors usually start with a series number that looks complete but is not. The same "6203" family appears in several sizes in OTT's alternator bearing catalog:

Modeld (mm)D (mm)B (mm)Note
6203-2RS174012Standard width
6203/14-2RS174014Same bore and OD, 2 mm wider
6203d14-2RS144012Reduced bore
6203-16-2RS164012Reduced bore
6303-2RS174714Larger OD for heavier belt load
62303-2RS174719Wider (19 mm) version of 6303

A 6203 that is 2 mm too wide will not seat; one with a 16 mm bore will not go on a 17 mm shaft. On your kit BOM, write the full d × D × B in millimetres next to every bearing number. If the original bearing is worn or unmarked, measure all three dimensions before ordering.

Need a size checked against a sample or drawing? Send us the alternator number or bearing dimensions and we will match it to a catalog model.

Spec 2: Outer-Ring Retention — Plain, EC or NP

Two bearings with identical dimensions can still behave differently in the housing. OTT alternator bearings come in three outer-diameter structures:

PrefixOuter-ring structureUse it when
No prefix (e.g. B10-50D)Smooth outer diameterStandard press fit into the alternator housing
EC (e.g. ECB10-50D-2RS)Two nylon expansion rings on the ODExpansion fit for housings with a wider bore tolerance
NP (e.g. NPB10-50D-2RS)Eccentric retaining groove on the OD + snap ringThe original design locks the bearing axially in the housing

If the original bearing had a groove or nylon rings, the replacement must have them too. A plain-OD bearing in a housing designed for an NP bearing can creep and spin in the bore, which damages the housing the rebuilder was trying to save.

Spec 3: Seals, C3 Clearance and Grease

Seals. Alternator bearings sit near the belt and are exposed to dust, water spray and engine-bay heat, so sealed 2RS bearings are standard. Some specifications go further: OTT's SA6303-2RSM-4PT uses brown ACM+SPCC seals.

Internal clearance. C3 is the common choice for alternator bearings: the bearing runs hot and fast, and the inner ring expands more than the outer ring, so C3 leaves room for that. Always follow the original bearing marking or the alternator drawing, and write the clearance on the BOM. OTT's alternator models such as B10-50D, SA6202-2RSM and SA6303-2RSM are supplied with C3 clearance. For the 4PT model the drawing defines it precisely: C3 radial clearance of 0.011–0.025 mm, P6 accuracy and a WTP grease fill of 25–35%.

Grease. Ask your supplier to state the grease type and fill on the drawing. Grease is invisible once the seals are on, and it is one of the main differences between an alternator-grade bearing and a general-purpose bearing of the same size.

Spec 4: Noise Grade and Test Evidence

Noise is the failure your customer hears first. Put a vibration grade on the BOM — Z3V3 is the grade OTT builds its alternator bearings to — and ask how it is checked. At OTT every alternator bearing is vibration tested before shipment, and the lab uses a BVT vibration analyzer plus life-testing machines.

For a remanufacturer, test data matters more than claims. Two OTT alternator bearing models passed a 1,004-hour continuous endurance test conducted by a Russian OEM customer — about 41 days of non-stop running — and OTT alternator bearings are tested for cold starts down to -60°C. If your market includes cold climates, ask for that data with your quote.

Spec 5: Cross-Reference by Number, Not by Brand

The most expensive mistake in a rebuild kit program is assuming that a bearing "fits Bosch" or "fits Denso". Each alternator maker uses many different bearings across its range. Confirm fitment against the alternator part number or the OEM bearing number. These are the verified Bosch and Denso numbers currently listed for OTT bearings:

Other OTT alternator bearings are listed with the references we have checked (WAI, PFI, alternator assembly numbers) on each product page. A blank Bosch or Denso cell means no verified number yet — not that the bearing does not fit. Send us your number and we will confirm.

One exception to watch: SA6303-2RSM-4PT has the same 17×47×14 mm envelope as a 6303 but is a four-point contact bearing. Do not apply 6303 cross-references to it.
